Compositeur, joueur de luth et organiste anglais, il effectue ses études dans sa ville natale avec Edward Gibbons, choirmaster, John Lugge, organiste de la cathédrale, et le chanoine William Wake, sert ensuite dans l'armée royale dont les déplacements sur le continent européen lui permet de se familiariser avec la musique italienne notamment, revient à Londres vers 1651, est nommé vers 1660 compositeur de la Private Music de Charles II, organiste de la Somerset House chappell, mais n'appartient jamais à la Chapel Royal du fait de son appartenance à la religion catholique.

Parmi ses compositions liturgiques sans doute chantées à la chapelle privée de la reine, on peut relever How doth the city sit solitary, verse anthem à 5 vx et orgue qui reprend les v. 1:1, 18 & 20, 2:13 et 5:16 des Lamentations de Jérémie.
